Good Scalp Care = Happy Head!

Welcome to Jade’s Secret Sauce Scalp Recipe!

Today we are branching out just because it was requested I share my Happy Scalp routine. I have dry and sensitive skin and that dry skin extends to my head. I need to moisturise my face but I don’t ever think to do my scalp and as a result, I am always itchy everywhere and It never occured to me it was due to being dry, I assumed it was just allergies.

Alright! Fact 1: Only need to do a scalp scrub once a month. You can Make Your Own for like $5 or you can buy one, choice is yours! If you don’t want your hair that much, maybe do it once a week, it honestly dependant on how you end up feeling :)

Fact 2: The reason you have an itchy head is because your skin on your head is dehydrated so you need to moisturise it! It is super dry as your scalp isn’t producing enough oil to keep it moisturized.

Fact 3: Most shampoo and conditioners are a higher PH than the PH of the scalp so you need to bring the PH of your scalp back down to normal with a PH balancing Rinse. Currently I use a 50:50 Apple Cyder vinegar and Water in a bottle and pour it over when conditioning.

Fact 4: Dandruff Vs Flakey. Flakey skin doesn’t always mean dandruff. The difference between a flakey scalp and dandruff is that dandruff has bigger flakes and will be oily or waxy. You scalp ay also be oily, scaly and red. If you have dandruff, start by getting a dandruff shampoo.

Fact 5: For happy skin, you need to drink lots of water and eat lots of natural fats like avocado and nuts. This will help stop the itching and it will help your skin overall. So healthy eating is another key nugget to stopping the itching!

Scalp Care Routine

Step one - start here for monthly

Get hair wet and apply scalp scrub and use shampoo brush to massage it in. You can also use an oil treatment if you are really struggling like this one!

Step 2 - start here for every wash

Wash hair with shampoo and use shampoo brush again to clean 💛 This removes all the dead flakes from dry or dandruffy scalp so that the scalp is clean and open to moisturising!

Step 3

Massage in coconut oil OR moisturising conditioner into the scalp and leave for 5- 15 minutes to absorb.

Step 4

Wash it out with a little bit of shampoo on the roots to get rid of oil and provide lift so your hair isn’t flat and greasy when you come out. If you used coconut oil and a mask, use a lot.

Step 5

Run a ph balancing rinse over the scalp.

Step 6

Use conditioner on the lengths of hair but not the roots and wash it all out.

IMPORTANT PRODUCTS AND EQUIPMENT

Shampoo Brush- A shampoo brush is this, I got on on ebay for like $4 but you can also buy a massaging one if that is your jam. If you don’t have one, just use your fingers and give yourself a nice scalp massage.

Shampoo Tips- If you have a dry scalp, get a moisturising shampoo, other shampoos like volumising ones will dry out your scalp.

Scalp Conditioner- If you are using conditioner. to moisturize your scalp, buy a moisturizing conditioner like this Palmers one but if you have a bigger budget, get whatever you want as long as it says things like Hydrating and Moisturising.

You Pay For What You Get- With skincare and hair care, you pay for what you get. The more you spend, the better quality ingredients, you can make your own stuff if you like but that is just something to keep in mind.

Dandruff- If you have dandruff and you need a dandruff shampoo but you really want a cruelty free one and you aren’t sure which one is good, this one is amazing and my Go To.

Ph Balancing Rinse- As I said it is literally organic cider vinegar and water mixed in a bottle. This doesn’t have to be expensive and i KNOW they have some real pricey ones out there but this one is just as good and it’s like $3!

Scalp Mask Products- If you want a scalp mask product, this one is suppose to be really good by Briogeo (i have not tried it but it is cruelty free). The Kristen Ess scalp line as well should be helpful to you (also C- Free)

DIY Scalp Scrub- Here is the recipe I used. I struggled to find Rosemary extract so I didn’t use it and it was a big mistake, you end up smelling of vinegar. You can use a tea tree oil if you have that around as well. Another Diy scalp scrub is taking 4 parts shampoo and 1 part Baking soda, mix it up and and use it as normal to help exfoliate the scalp!

Coconut Oil- Buy the nice pure organic stuff, it isn’t much more expensive and still way cheaper than buying a scalp mask or scrub. Tesco do their own version and it is worth it.

Apple Cyder Vinegar- You need a organic natural one from the mother and at 5% acidity. (it says it on the bottle, it was confused too at from the mother. This one!

Other oils instead of coconut oil- If you stick to the nice ones, I hear castor oil is good, argon oil, tea tree oil is also fantastic for the scalp! A quick google will tell you if you don’t like coconut. There are so many DIY scalp scrubs out there if you are zero waste concious or you just like me, have a budget and prefer natural ingredients, have a google!
